A disturbing trend

In the wake of another mass shooting in the U.S., it is hard for most of us to make sense of these continuing tragic events. But it is clear that these events devastate families and communities while triggering a bizarrely polarized response from political leaders, law enforcement, gun rights activists, and concerned citizens. It is also obvious that mental health has become a significant part of the conversation, albeit a confusing one. Therefore, I would encourage anyone with an interest in grasping the complexity of this issue to explore the recent research, look at the statistics, and examine the responses from community leaders and stakeholders before coming to a fixed conclusion. Here are some resources that may be of use for gaining a deeper understanding of the issue, along with resources for those who have been impacted directly by gun violence:

  • How many mass shootings have there been in 2023?
  • It's tempting to say gun violence is about mental illness. The truth is much more complex.
  • Mass shootings and mental illness: Which one is right?
  • Gun Violence Archive.
  • Giffords: The issue.
